The History of Fischer's Meat Market

Where It All Began

The story of Fischer’s began on St. Patrick’s Day in 1927, when two brothers, Joe and John Fisher, along with Walter Pulte and OJ Huchton, opened the first store across the street from where our Glockenspiel stands today. After 18 months, we moved to a new location.

Growing With Muenster

Across the Street

At the time, Muenster was a small German Catholic community where church and community life were closely connected. Sundays were especially busy, with families coming into town for church and stopping at Fischer’s to pick up processed beef and other groceries for the week. Much of the meat was cured or smoked and cooled with ice, long before modern refrigeration.

Mass, Then Groceries

Then, on August 13, 1962, Fischer’s moved across the street to the location where we are today. Butch & Johnny Fisher, sons of John Fisher, bought Fischer’s Meat Market and began running the business by the end of 1975. Proud of their German heritage, they renovated the interior and exterior of the store to give it the distinct Bavarian look we know and love today.

The Early Days

Ice, Smoke & Cure

Just a few years later, the Great Depression brought difficult economic times. Families had less money to spend, making it challenging for small businesses like Fischer’s to survive. However, our German smoked and cured sausage became an important product that helped carry the business through those difficult years. As the economy recovered, Fischer’s continued to grow and adapt. The introduction of freezers allowed customers to store meat longer and allowed Fischer’s to produce and sell more products.

The 1930s

Saved by German Sausage

During this time, we also welcomed German sausage master Helmut Hans to Muenster. He stayed from 1981 to 1983 and taught our family how to make authentic German sausage. He shared more than 20 recipes with us, many of which we are still proud to make and sell today. His knowledge helped preserve the German traditions that are such an important part of Fischer’s.

One Last Move

As Fischer’s continued to grow, they decided to expand the store in 1995. They purchased the Ranch property between Fischer’s and Muenster Milling, cleared it in 1996, and began a major expansion. After finishing the expansion in 1998, they finally, in 1999, began making Aunt Louise and Uncle Johnny’s dream of a Glockenspiel a reality. After two years of preparation and renovations, the first chime took place on February 25, 2001. The Glockenspiel quickly became a beloved landmark and a lasting symbol of Fischer’s and Muenster’s German heritage.

Processing In-House

In 2005, Butch’s son, Steven Fisher, and his wife, Penny Fisher, took over the business and continued many of our family’s traditions. To this day, we sell groceries, process animals, and create and smoke our own meats and cheeses. Through their hard work and dedication, my parents have kept the business thriving, supporting our local schools and community while preserving our family’s legacy. Between 2018 and 2020, they built a 9,999-square-foot production facility, where we now produce over 150,000 pounds of sausage, 100,000 pounds of cheese, and 5,000 pounds of jerky each year—bringing our overall production to more than 255,000 pounds of products each year. Today, Penny and Steven are working hard to prepare for a special celebration honoring our history and heritage on March 20, 2027, at 10:00 a.m. It would mean so much to our family, employees, and community to have you join us as we celebrate the legacy that has brought us this far. We hope to see you there!
